So just when you think it is safe...

So just when you think it is safe and you have a good place to live for a long time, reality comes and slaps your face a good one. I just found out that when the rent in the new building I am moving to goes up, it will go up $300. Now this is way the hell out of my price range for sure.

This was my last hops for a safe and affordable place to live in Moose Jaw. What can I say – Greed is the greatest motivator in the lives of all the building owners in this city I guess. After all, when you are making a good profit at $500 for rent, why do you need to charge $800?

This leaves me with no options that are safe and good for my disability at all. I can’t afford to be taking a cab downtown to shop and to see Mom and help her out all the time. So I would be stuck with not helping her at all. This is a great loss for the both of us and she may have to go to a care facility in that event.

The other part of this being a horrible thing is safety. The buildings that are in affordable range are almost all not safe to your health, not to mention the great risk of being robbed. This would leave me in some rat whole trying not to get my stuff taken all the time. Fear would be with me all of the time and I would be afraid to leave the apartment.

The other option is to be in someone home in a basement or something. This may be a much safer option, but it would be far from downtown and travel expenses would cut into my ability to buy food and such. In any event I would most likely not be able to be with Mom every day as she needs. She would not have me to help her and there is no one else to do so.

When the average low end rent in the city is $750 and the amount I get from disability is only $480 there is a problem here to say the least. It is far past time for the government to get off their ass and wake up to the situation of sky rocketing rents in this province. We are human beings and we have the right to be safe in our accommodations. This does not mean that we are huddling from the cold drafts in some 8 x 10 room watching the pain peel off the walls. Get responsible people and wake up.
