Heredity by Rational Youth Changed My Life
Heredity by Rational Youth was put out in 1985 and had the following songs. A side: Heredity, No More and No Less, Call Me, In Your Eyes, I've Got a Sister in the Navy. B side: Bang On, Freeze, Burn the Night Away, Holiday in Bangkok, Sorry
The first album by them I had was Cold War Night Life from 1982. This was so very different from any of the other bands of their kind that I fell in love with the band.
Heredity took me to the next level and it was such a divergence from anything else I had listened to, that I found it inspiring and it in fact altered how I saw art, music and many other things. It gave me the desire to do art, and that lasted my entire life. I as a side note got big into poetry because of this album. No More and No Less was my absolute favorite song on the album.
I have to say, to this day, this is my favorite album of all time.
The list of albums of theirs I owned on LP where: Cold War Night Life, Rational Youth (both versions), Heredity. Later on digital or CD were: To the Goddess Electricity, Magic Box, Future Past Tense, Wavelength.
To say the least, it was a life time goal to see them live. Being my health is failing and they are retired and the opportunity to see them play never came up, I will probably die without seeing them life.
In all incarnations of the band, I have followed them and have loved it all.
To this day I overplay my playlists and my MP3s from my cloud. They have been a significant part of my music listening lifetime. Streaming has made this better in a way, where I can put a playlist on shuffle and drift into the band - or to play a single song and see what the AI thinks goes with it. Often many of the songs in the nights stream will come back to Rational Youth.
I think they are one of the most unique and influential bands in Canadian history, but I'm sure many will not agree. To this day I still listen to the LP Heredity at least twice a month.
Side note 1: I never obtained any of the singles.
Side note 2: The band started in Montreal, Quebec, Canada in 1981.
Side Note 3: They where billed as Synth Pop mostly.
Side Note 4: My first encounter was them on TV, but I can't recall the show. The song they played was, "Cité Phosphore". I literally needed to get them on LP.
